All White Cats Deaf

It should be pointed out that not all white cats are deaf but a genetic predisposition makes them most likely to develop the condition.

All white cats deaf. The reasons for it are genetic but are very different from simply being caused by one gene. 075 2 of cats have a white coat and blue eyes. The deafness is caused by degeneration of the auditory apparatus of the inner ear and may affect one ear unilateral or both ears bilateral.

These hair cells are connected to the auditory hearing nerves which sparks a nerve impulse down the auditory pathway that connects to the brain. 30-40 of cats with one blue eye are deaf. These cats are not albino which is a complete lack of all pigment as they do have color in the irises of their eyes and they may have color in their skin or in part of their haircoat.

How will I know if my cat is deaf. Over the years some myths about white-coated cats have been unfairly assigned to albino cats by an association coat color that is itself false. No this is not always the case.

Interestingly deaf cats who are white and have blue eyes make up around just 1-15 of the total cat population. In cats inherited congenital present from birth deafness is seen almost exclusively in white coated individuals. This percentage is even higher up to 40 in cats that have only one blue eye and somewhere between 65-85 of all-white cats are born deaf.

The percentage rises to 40 percent if the cat has one blue eye while upwards of 65 to 85 percent of all-white cats with both eyes blue are deaf. In most cases of congenital deafness the cats affected will have an all-white or mostly white coat In this case deafness is most often inherited. Deafness is a result of this process failing at some point.

If your cat has a congenital defect it just means it was an issue that was present at birth. And 65 to 85 percent of blue-eyed white cats are deaf. It is a myth that every white cat is deaf or that white cats with blue eyes green eyes or one of each are always deaf.
