The Rusty-spotted cat is another small cat about which not much is known. They have been described by some as a smaller washed out version of the Leopard Cat Prionailurus bengalensis. Rusty-spotted Cats Prionailurus rubiginosus compete with Black-footed Cats Felis nigripes and the Kodkod Leopardus guigna as the worlds smallest wild cat species.
It is about half the size of the domestic cat. It weighs between 09 and 16 kg 20 and 35 lb and reaches a maximum head-body length of 48 cm 19 in. They can come in spotted or marble look.
Some leopard cats have a single stripe running down their spine. Described as a washed-out smaller version of the leopard cat their more rusty colored tail measures about half the length of their body and is thick with less distinct spots. 91 of US pet parents consider their pets part of their family.
Markings include a white muzzle and facial stripes. Six dark streaks are on each side of the head extending over the cheeks and forehead. The rusty-spotted cat has a short reddish grey fur over most of the body with rusty spots on the back and flanks.
You can find the spotted or marble marking on the brown Bengal cats. Aside from being rare this species is also very shy which makes it even more surprising that two volunteers spotted these tiny animals wandering around a big-cat reserve. They are smaller than a house cat and have a slender body.
